Freedom of speech !
? Thursday, July 12, 2007 5:41 AM

All of us are living on the same planet but in individual countries, influenced by particular cultures and heritage. For example in singapore, we are mounted with people of different races and religions. It is inevitably to have some conflicts and discords going on due to many argumentative reasons, especially when it comes to a multiracial nation such as singapore. In order to coexist harmoniously, we have to learn to accept and be sensitive towards the different beliefs and cultures of others.

After reading the 2 articles, i personally think that szilagyi's approach should be adopted in the context of Singapore. " There is no doubt that freedom of speech is an essential foundaiton for any democracy. But when newspaper insist on this right, they have to understand that they do not-alone-create the context and lifespan of their messages. " I totally agree with that sane statement. Any insensitive or unthoughtful decisions made by governments or an authorities will trigger a big load of racial issues such as racial riots, strikes, and even lawsuits, etc. Hence ,everyone should have be very clear of their "counterpart" cultures and practices so as to avoid any unnecessary mistakes, be it in a casual speech or in daily behaviour.

I still recalled the 1964 race riots whereby communal feelings are being stirred up. the past history has taught us something and that is , there is only a thin line between different racial groups and we must not cross beyond that line or else, feelings of distrust and hatred would be stirred. In the case of the drawing of profret muhammed, the european deem it as a way to express their thoughts freely but however, they had unknowingly cross that line. they had offended the religion beliefs of the islamic community. Had they been more sensitive towards racial issues deaths and tension wouldnt occur. I do not agree to Singer's view that " freedom of speech includes the freedom to say what everybody else believes to be false, and even what many people find offensive". No one will like it when their sacred beliefs in gods and religion are being condemned. We as a mature lot mus know how to respect that.

In conclusion, i agree that freedom of speech mus be allow in this modern society so as to progress as a whole but however, we also have to limit ourself and to always think before what we say.

prejudice is a disease that can never be get rid of. do you agree?

The word prejudice refers to a prejudgmental statement of ill doing, or an evaluation or decision made before the facts of a case could be properly determined and weighed. However, i do not agree that it is something that can never be eliminated. Although it is a notion deeply etched on the back of one's mind, it can slowly be eliminated due to cultural changes and changes in one's mindset. this may be due to personal experiences that may change the perception of someone towards the bias party. In most cases prejudism happens when there is social stereotypes whereby the affected ones would be minorty group. Judgements based on experience may, however, be coloured by prejudice. one example to talk about would be cases in america whereby the whites are prejudiced against the blacks. this is merely due to the differences in skin colour. It is often stereotyped that the blacks are the ones commiting most of the crimes in america wheres in reality, the whites are actually responsible for 97% of the crimes in america. the prejudism existing in america is actully slowly deteriorating now as compared to the past. this is mainly due to the literacy in people. education has made people more liberal and more willing to look things at a different angle. This slowly eliminates prejudism.

1. “YouTube has no ethics, it's been created for the sole purpose of entertainment and money.” Do you agree?
? Saturday, April 21, 2007 8:13 AM

No. but however, it is to a large extent that youtube is created by the 3 men as a way to make money when companies use it as a channel to publicise their videos or whatsoever. It is a milestone for videos entertainment. As youtube is considered as a mass media, it is undeniable that its sole purpose is to provide entertainment to the public. Many a time, entertaining video dramas are posted on youtube. This actually allows us to watch certain dramas without us having to waste money buying the entire set of CDs. Music videos broadcasted on youtube also serve as a form of entertainment. Nonetheless, youtube could serve as a way to provide information and also for educational purposes. In a particular clip, a comedy troupe from Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, tries encouraging women to do a monthly self-exam for breast cancer by putting the message to a popular hip-hop song. This serves as a way to entertainment the mass while informing them about the important of health screenings at the same time. To add on, Larry Kaplan, executive director of the recently founded US Autism and Asperger Association, says that parents are eager for videos showing how to do behavioural interventions with their autistic children because health funds rarely cover medical visits designed for this purpose. Thus, besides entertaining, youtube actually prove to be more important than what it seems to be. Therefore i can safely conclude that youtube is not created merely to entertain and to make money.

Self Introduction
? Friday, March 23, 2007 9:24 AM

I am Liow Ying Ru from 30/07. Im a first intaker currently hoping to join interact club as my cca as i wish to help out in doing community services. my cca in secondary school was chinese orchestra. The reason why i didnt want to continue it in jc life is actually due to the huge amount of time i have to dedicate to this cca. I feel that im a person who gets stress up easily therefore i couldnt afford to get myself involve in such a time consuming cca. Hence, i would rather join interact club and give my best in participating in club activities. Moreover, joining interact club allows me to meet different people which caters to my inquisitive and outgoing personalities. It also allows me to empathize with the inept group whether physically or mentally.

Just like my other counterparts, the reason i chose to enter a JC is because i want to enter a university. My ultimate aim is to graduate wif at least a 2nd class honours from NUS.
I also wanted to enter the chemical and biology faculty in NUS ; evident from the subject combination im currently taking . H2 biology , chemistry maths and h1 economics.

Im a person who love meeting new people and character wise, im actually a very friendly and outgoing person so , do not hesitate to befriend me. I belief in playing hard as well as studying hard therefore, i believe im able to draw a clear line between playing and studying.
Lastly, i hope that through this short entry, you will hav a better understanding of me .
